Long known as one of the most beautiful towns in the Northeast, Summit offers a surprise around every corner. From tree-lined streets of magnificent homes to a shopper’s paradise of unique boutique stores with ample parking. A rich and lively cultural scene - outdoor sculpture, the Visual Arts Center, live performances at the Summit Theater; live music at any number of different venues, and restaurants of every ethnicity from casual to fine dining. Plus lots and lots of green space from parks and playgrounds to our glorious 13-acre Reeves-Reed Arboretum. Purchased from the Indians on October 28, 1664 for “twenty fathoms of trading cloth, two made coats, two guns, two kettles, ten bars of lead and twenty handfuls of powder”, Summit was settled by Puritans from Britain and New England about 1710. After 1837, when the railroad came, Summit changed from a cozy farming area to a quasi- commercial center. After the Civil War, Summit became a luxurious summer resort area, attracting wealthy people who built extensive summer estates. Today, Summit is a family-oriented community with light industry, a cultural and spiritual diversity and wonderful schools. In addition, our town has become a model for civic mindedness in Northern New Jersey. And, every year friends and neighbors gather to enjoy our annual celebrations like the Summit Decorated Bicycle Parade and Fireworks Display on the 4th of July, the spooky fun of our Haunted House on Halloween and the pageantry of Santa’s Arrival Parade in December.
